1. Who we are
Who's Out? is a social discovery app built for Ireland. It helps people see who's out, share plans, discover places, and connect with friends — with privacy controls designed into the product.
For privacy questions or requests, email support@whosoutapp.ie.
2. Information we collect
We collect information you provide, information generated when you use the app, and limited technical data needed to run the service.
Account and profile
- Email address — used to sign in with a one-time code (OTP).
- Nickname / display name and optional profile details you choose to share.
- Age group (for example 18–24) — collected during onboarding to keep the community age-appropriate. We do not require a date of birth beyond confirming you are 18 or older.
- Home area — optional county and town used to personalise Places and discovery.
- Profile photo (avatar) — if you upload one. Photos may be reviewed by moderators before they appear publicly.
- Visibility preferences — such as who can see your activity (for example Everyone, Friends, or more limited settings where available).
Activity and social features
- Out & About status — vibe, destination, and related status text you publish.
- Check-ins and map activity — including coordinates or venue associations when you check in or appear on the map.
- Friends — friend requests, friendships, and related social connections.
- Messages — private chats, plan / group chats, and venue-related chats you participate in.
- Plan Invites — invites you create or respond to, including RSVP status.
- Places engagement — ratings, reviews, and place submissions you make.
- Events and travel plans — if you create or join them.
- Safety actions — blocks, reports, and moderation records needed to keep the community safe.
Device, notifications, and technical data
- Push notification tokens — so we can send alerts (for example friend requests or messages) when you allow notifications.
- Device and app information — such as device type, OS version, and app version, used for reliability, debugging, and support.
- Log and diagnostic data — limited technical logs related to authentication, errors, and service performance.
Website / beta list
If you join our beta list on the website, we collect your email address and any optional details you provide (such as location in Ireland or how you heard about us), along with a timestamp.
3. How we use your information
We use your information to:
- Create and secure your account, and authenticate you via email OTP.
- Operate core features — discovery, map, Out & About, friends, messaging, places, plans, and events.
- Show relevant nearby or area-based content when you grant location permission.
- Send push notifications you have opted into.
- Moderate content (including profile photos), investigate reports, and enforce our Terms of Service.
- Improve reliability, fix bugs, and understand how the product is used in aggregate.
- Communicate with you about the service, safety, or beta access when appropriate.
- Comply with legal obligations and protect our rights and users' safety.
Where GDPR applies, we typically rely on contract performance (to provide the app), legitimate interests (security, product improvement, moderation), and consent where required (for example precise location and push notifications).
4. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only as needed to run Who's Out?:
Other users
Depending on your visibility settings and who you interact with, other users may see your nickname, approved profile photo, Out & About status, check-in or map presence, messages you send, place reviews, and similar social content.
Service providers
- Supabase — authentication, database, realtime features, and file storage (including avatars).
- Email delivery providers — to send sign-in codes and transactional emails.
- Expo / push notification infrastructure — to deliver push notifications to your device.
- Maps and geolocation providers — such as Google Maps and/or LocationIQ for maps, reverse geocoding, and venue detection.
- Hosting providers — for our website and related infrastructure.
These providers process data on our behalf under contractual and security obligations appropriate to their role.
Legal and safety
We may disclose information if required by law, or when reasonably necessary to protect users, investigate abuse, or defend legal rights.
5. Location information
Who's Out? is a location-aware social app. With your permission, we may use device location to power map discovery, nearby people or places, check-ins, Out & About destinations, and related features.
- You can deny or revoke location permission in your device settings at any time.
- Some features may work less well or not at all without location access.
- We also store optional home area (county/town) you choose during setup or in Profile.
- Location data used for social features may be visible to others according to your settings and the feature you use.
Who's Out? is not an emergency or safety-tracking service. Do not rely on it for crisis response or precise navigation.
6. Data retention
We keep personal information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the service. We may retain certain information longer where required for security, dispute resolution, legal compliance, or legitimate business needs (for example moderation records).
When you delete your account (or request deletion), we will delete or anonymise personal data associated with your account within a reasonable period, except where we must retain it for legal or safety reasons. Backups may persist for a limited time before being purged in the normal backup cycle.
Messages, reviews, and similar content you shared with others may remain visible to recipients or in community contexts after deletion, consistent with how social products generally work — we will still remove your account identifiers where reasonably possible.
7. Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), access-controlled databases, authentication via one-time codes, and row-level security policies where applicable. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. Please protect your email account, as it is used to access Who's Out?.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live (including under GDPR in the EU/EEA and Ireland), you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
- Delete your personal data ("right to be forgotten"), subject to legal exceptions.
- Restrict or object to certain processing.
- Data portability — receive a copy of data you provided in a commonly used format, where applicable.
- Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent (for example by turning off location or notifications).
To exercise these rights, email support@whosoutapp.ie. We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling a request.
If you are in the EU/EEA or UK, you may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. In Ireland, that is the Data Protection Commission (dataprotection.ie).
9. Children's privacy
Who's Out? is for users aged 18 and over only. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has created an account, contact us at support@whosoutapp.ie and we will take appropriate action, including deleting the account.
10. International transfers
Our service providers may process data in countries outside Ireland or the EEA. Where that happens, we take steps designed to ensure appropriate safeguards are in place (such as standard contractual clauses or equivalent protections offered by the provider).
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app or by other reasonable means. Continued use of Who's Out? after an update means you acknowledge the revised policy.
